- The Universidade de Vigo and Optare Solutions, in collaboration with MASORANGE, have conducted a pilot test on the MASORANGE network at the Vigo Technological Campus. The objective was to test the effectiveness of advanced technology and connectivity in managing emergencies, such as fire control or search and rescue operations.
Vigo, June 26, 2024 – The Universidade de Vigo, Optare Solutions, and MASORANGE have carried out an innovative experience at the Vigo Campus. The goal was to test the combination of 5G, Edge Computing, and Artificial Intelligence technologies in managing emergency situations, such as fire detection and control or searching for missing persons.
This pilot combined the quality and capability of MASORANGE’s 5G mobile network, Optare Solutions’ extensive experience as a service integrator and enabler over digital infrastructures in the telecommunications sector, and the edgeContinuum solution based on Edge Computing. The edgeContinuum solution, developed at the Universidade de Vigo, is supported by the IGNICIA program of the Axencia Galega de Innovación (part of the Xunta de Galicia) and integrated with the GSMA’s CAMARA EdgeCloud standard.
The experience involved local police and used a DJI Matrice 200 Series V2 drone equipped with a surveillance camera, Gimbal stabilizer for moving recordings, and an Edge environment with advanced video processing methods.
Thanks to MASORANGE’s high-speed, ultra-low latency 5G network, the drone can transmit real-time video from the emergency area to the Edge Computing platform for processing. The images are analyzed using the application developed by Optare Solutions and deployed on the edgeContinuum computing solution. This uses an advanced Artificial Intelligence model to detect, for example, potential forest fires. The results generate alerts, enabling a quick and accurate response to possible emergencies.
Participants in this test aim to revolutionize areas such as fighting forest fires or searching for missing persons. In the case of forest fires, the drone system facilitates the work of emergency services by offering live video for firefighters to examine the contextualized fire area and assess its safety before entering. Similarly, in searching for missing persons, the drone’s geographic area processing with Artificial Intelligence can determine the presence of people in the search area with high accuracy.
