Autonomous 5G Edge Infrastructure
A5EdgeInfra
Autonomous 5G Edge Infrastructure
The A5GEdgeInfra project focuses on researching technologies and architectures for advanced 5G and 6G networks, enabling communication and information processing capabilities in remote areas with low coverage. This facilitates digitization through sensing and agile decision-making in cases such as precision agriculture or sensorization of remote industries. The project investigates the design of new 5G antennas, network architectures, efficient virtualization technologies for Edge Computing environments, and autonomous power supply techniques using renewable energy sources.
The project is structured into three research lines: optimization of edge virtualization environments, efficient edge management, and agile planning and deployment of portable 5G antennas, aiming to provide a 5G+edge infrastructure for digitization in any location in a short time frame.
The main thematic area is Edge Computing, focusing on exploring lightweight virtualization techniques that optimize the use of available physical resources and their utilization over a heterogeneous environment of CPU architectures and operating systems.
A5GEdgeInfra aims to research technologies to address scenarios where current 5G and Edge Computing deployments are still inadequate. The goal is to create a portable 5G infrastructure with Edge Computing capabilities to meet various communication and information processing needs in remote areas. This requires agile and autonomous deployment, as well as resource optimization and edge management. The project explores virtualization technologies to run applications on edge nodes with different CPU architectures, efficient management algorithms, and unified management standards. Additionally, it seeks to simplify the planning of private 5G network deployments and improve energy management through the use of renewable sources.
For the execution of the A5EdgeInfra project – an industrial research project in advanced 5G with file number TSI-064200-2022-22, OPTARE SOLUTIONS S.L. has been granted a subsidy of €334,458.60 in the UNICO I+D 5G-6G call for proposals: Universalization Program of Digital Infrastructures for Cohesion (Research Infrastructures, Scientific-Technical Equipment, and Advanced 5G R&D Projects).
