Sonata

SONATA (Service Programming and Orchestration for Virtualized Software Networks) es un proyecto de SONATA (Service Programming and Orchestration for Virtualized Software Networks) is a European-funded innovation project under the Horizon 2020 program, as part of the 5G-PPP initiative. The project aims to address the challenges posed by NFV (Network Function Virtualization) and SDN (Software-Defined Networks) technologies for the development and deployment of complex services, focusing on the future 5G scenario built on these technologies.

The project involves major network equipment manufacturers such as NEC, Thales, and Alcatel-Lucent (now Nokia), large operators like Portugal Telecom, Telefónica, and British Telecom, as well as the Galician company Optare Solutions.

The purpose of SONATA is to facilitate the introduction of SDN and NFV technologies into telecommunications operators by creating a demonstration platform that allows the dynamic programming of services in virtualized 5G network environments. This will be achieved through the development of:

  • Models, methods, and tools for programming virtualized services
  • Methods, tools, and algorithms for the uniform and integrated orchestration of user-oriented network services over an infrastructure that provides connectivity, computational capacity, and storage
  • Tools for the efficient and reliable implementation and management of the developed services in a dynamic and scalable manner

SONATA aims to contribute to the achievement of the following goals set for the development of the next generation of 5G communications by the 5GPPP organization:

  • Reduce time to market for network services by decreasing the time required to develop associated services.
  • Optimize network resource utilization and reduce the costs of deploying and operating those services.
  • Accelerate the adoption of software-defined networks in the industry by adopting the DevOps model for the entire service lifecycle.

Optare Solutions, leveraging the knowledge gained in service orchestration and provisioning through its close collaboration with various operators in the Spanish market, works on the development of systems for designing, orchestrating, and deploying virtualized resources and the services associated with those resources. The company also participates in the development of the platform that will allow for the validation, testing, and verification of the integration of all system components and their functionality. Additionally, the project will analyze the real-time data generated by the virtualized systems to verify their performance metrics.
